My Own Example of Paper #3.. answer the question: Who Are You?

AND

click here for the latest, up-to-date syllabus including changes in the Flowers for Algernon readings/discussions, etc.

Josh- if the author is unknown, put the article or website title in the parenthesis instead.

I emailed the following to all of you....
TOMORROW's CLASS: Bring the book Flowers for Algernon!!

First off, ANYONE wanting to present their "Stretch Projects" (meaning those of you who planned on presenting as part of your project) need to do that tomorrow. They don't have to be formal or very long. If you are in pjs and talk for 5 minutes, good for you!

Secondly, I'll talk briefly about Paper #3. I have an example online that I will link to from the class blog soon.

Third, I forgot to assign you all to read last week in Flowers for Algernon (my fault!), so you'll need to start on that in class or wherever. I will also post Questions about the book on Blackboard in case you want to print them off. For next Tuesday's class, you'll need to read the first third of the book (1-70: It will go by fast, trust me.). On Tuesday, we'll talk about the book... so be ready to discuss!

Lastly, ANYONE who wants me to briefly look at their Paper #2s before they hand them in on Friday (due by 5pm), I will do so at the end of class.

Jenny- GREAT start on your fashion trends paper...

Heather... your first question with not wanting to use a block quote- you are right. If all the info is from the same article, just place one parenthetical citation at the end of the paragraph with either the author's last name or the article title.. on your Works Cited page, I will see that you found it in The Forum so you don't need that in the parenthetical.

Your surveys are GREAT. You can either lump them together in your Works Cited page or place each one separately:

Smith, John. Interview/Survey. 28 Oct 03.

Surveys of Sorority participants. 28 Oct 03.

I will accept either method.

GREAT topics and advice on here people! Rock on!

Well, I still haven't adjusted time-zone wise (plus with Daylight Savings mixed up in there)... but I am here safely and that's all that matters.

I am going to TRY to read all of the below entries, give my feedback, etc.. in the lab today (another helpful work day), I will be working on my stuff as you work, but feel free to ask questions.... and if you need me to look at your first page of your paper- I can do that too.

As far as length with these projects/papers- just make sure you are doing 5-7 pages worth of work. With websites, create 4 webpages within your site.. with PowerPoint- 12 slides... with a presentation/paper combo: 10 minutes takes off 1-2 pages of the paper part.... etc. If you have photos/pics in your paper, add more length (pictures aren't that hard to put in).

If a lot of you don't show up to the computer lab, I may head back to my office. I will be here from now until 1:30pm today for sure if you want to pop up to my office.

What's up playas

Well, I've kinda been MIA this last week, very very busy. But DONT WORRY...I haven't forgotten about the English Stretch project.

The first part of last week I was still gathering information about my topic...Poker. I looked for information about the history, different versions, types of players in it, and even POKER ETIQUETTE!! (who would've thought there was poker etiquette? haha...)

Then during the middle of the week I started to try to make a webpage. Man, this HTML stuff is tough. We'll see if I can figure it out though because I think it would be fun to do a webpage on Poker. If not, I guess I'll be up all night writing a paper on it. :(

Here's what I think about some of yours:
Jenny - very informative, I like that a lot. Nice opening sentence. Also I like how you keep it fun with examples that we know like the movies that you mentioned and Sir Mix-A-Lot!

Heather - good topic, I'm interested in reading the rest of it. You are such an awesome writer! It's very detailed - which is good because then I can understand your paper clearly.

10.21.2003

The first paragraphs below look great! Some possible tweaks, though: Josh- you may want to connect flying and teleporting to make your first and second sentences flow together better... and Mark- the sentence that starts with "I chose to write about.." probably can be deleted or changed to work with the rest of the paragraph better.
Post your feedback about class on the Discussionboard part of my Blackboard site. Thanks!

For those of you that want to know (like Heather) I am teaching two classes next semester.. I switched with someone so I have a night class with my 8 am class. The night class is on Thursdays from 5 to 7:30 pm.

Tomorrow we are in the IACC room 114. For Thursday's class (since we don't have class), you will need to blog your first paragraph and comment on two others from either class by Monday. Also, use that day off to work on your Stretch Projects. I am glad some of you are liking your project. That was my goal. I am so sneaky.

When we have class next Tuesday, Oct 28, it will be in another computer lab, and it will be our last work day for Paper 2. Whether you show up to the lab or not, blog about what you did on that day for your paper/project. The lab we will be in is located in the basement of the West Dining Center. I believe that that is in the middle of the high rise dorms.

Paper #2 the Stretch Project is due on Halloween by 5pm. IF you have a powerpoint presentation or something that can't be put on paper, either put it on a disk and hand that in OR bring it to class on Thursday, Oct 30. If you are going to present something to us as part of your project, plan to do it on Thursday, Oct 30. Email me with further questions, or talk to me in class tomorrow.

Hey all.

I'm not feeling well today. I cancelled 8am class, and will have someone inform you 12:30'rs with a sign or something. My stomach is churning from something. It's getting better as I rest... this never happens to me so I apologize. I wonder what I ate? Someone should do a paper on all the different types of food poisoning you can get. Wait, that paper may make me ill.

Whatever was due today in class, bring with you to Tuesday's class in the lab. We're in IACC 114 again.

See ya.
GO BISON!

10.14.2003

I thought it was great watching the comedians in class. I payed attention for the whole time, whereas if we would've had to read it, I either wouldn't have done it or wouldn't have understood it. Plus, they use "our" language, and put serious or political matters into terms where we can relate and understand.

10.09.2003

For Next Tuesday, like I mentioned in class, you were assigned to read about Reviews in the book (page 386) as well as have your Paper #2 topic ready.

10.08.2003

THE MOST UP-TO-DATE SYLLABUS CAN NOW BE FOUND HERE!
=Veteran's Day is November 11th. A Tuesday. It sort of screws up things, but oh well right?

The shape or format for paper #2 CAN take the shape of a commentary or review if you wish. This paper/project is very, very S-T-R-E-T-C-H-A-B-L-E. You do whatever you want with it as long as you are stretching your brain and doing about 5 pages worth of writing/presenting/creating. If you want to do something a little different, check it out with me. I think I come across as a pretty flexible person. And I like projects that are not "normal".

I'm an idiot.

We don't have class on Veteran's Day. Every other year, it's been on a Monday so I never worried about it. ERGH.

So, our problem now is what to do with things on that day. I have to move around things AGAIN. Any suggestions? I will try to redo the syllabus and have a new one on my website ASAP.

As far as I know, we have classes on Veteran's Day. If not, I will change around things later.

Here are some PAPER#2 TOPICS that I let spill out of my head today:

-Anything related to Major (Grad School options, Possible Jobs)
-Teach yourself Something (iMovie, PowerPoint, PhotoShop, HTML, Java, Website Creation, etc)
-Teach the class Something (Guitar, Yoga, Bow Hunting, Cooking, etc)
-Psychology (Yawning, disorders, crying when happy, relationships, religions)
-Profiles (Interview someone you want to know more about, sports start, musicians, famous people)
-Curious Questions about the World in General
-Partying, College Life around the World (binge drinking, the drinking age)
-Other Topics: (Sports' history, music, media, Reality tv, Social issues, Education in America)

FORMATS OTHER THAN THE TRADITIONAL ACADEMIC PAPER TO TRY OUT:

-website(s) (in our book)
-weblog(s)
-powerpoint presentation
-movie (video)
-brochures/FAQ sheets (in our book)
-manuels ("how to" guides for playing guitar or cooking or yoga)
-booklets
-poster(s)
-ETC

The RUBRIC I will follow for Paper #2:

=Well researched (4 or more sources and cite sources in paper correctly/ Works Cited Page)
=Design of document/format is Creative
=the paper is Interesting and Informative Throughout
=Narrowed down focus (binge drinking in Fargo vs. binge drinking in Tokyo is a better focus than the U.S. vs. Japan)
=First paragraph has to blow me out of the water!
=Bonus points for interviews and surveys (that YOU do)
=Grammar, Punctuation, Spelling
=Length... if you don't hand in something that is a complete 5 pages long.. erg! Trouble! (manuels, brochures, FAQ sheets- these things must end up totalling 5 pages.. talk to me if you have ?s about this)

=Anything else??

Okay, I'm confused. Do we have class for sure on Veterans day?? The syllabus says so, but I didn't think that there were classes.
I don't know, I'm confused.

10.07.2003

Wow- great entries everyone! Thanks to Heather for the research! I did yawn reading that.. DARN IT! Now how about the crying when you are happy or excited... ?..... hmph.

This week is basically preparation for the review assignment next Tuesday. In groups of 2-3 you'll have to write a review of these comedians. Coming to class WILL HELP obviously. And as far as reviews go, read about them in our book for next Tuesday (will officially assign on Thursday)... You can compare based on their humor using taboo subjects.. who is funnier than who and why, etc.

ALSO, I posted this on BlackBoard but basically next Tuesday you'll have to sign up for a topic for Paper #2. I don't want more than 4 people to the same subject if possible. Too much repetition makes me nuts. And I am pretty nuts the way it is. Duh!

LASTLY, check out the BisonBlog.. a creation of mine. It's part of my thesis research, and I'll blab it all to you soon in case people want to join it.

Final Questions: How is further brainstorming for Paper #2 going? Should we spend more than one day in the computer lab? Should I change Oct 16 from Commercials to Oct 28th's topic and make that day, Oct 28, a work day? I may or may not be able to reserve a computer lab for that day... It may have to be a "work on your own day and blog about it so I know you did something" Day...

10.06.2003

Ok, what was our assignment for tomorrow?? Was it just to think of ideas for paper two??

10.04.2003

I'm glad some of you liked class Thursday.. I just think sometimes our society and media have WAY more to say about our culture than words.. images and jokes and humor get us thinking more. More ideas from Jay and Conan for Paper #2:

=Why do we like humor more than seriousness? (p.s. We're watching comedians this next week too!)
=Do all late night talk shows, or talk shows in general, have the same organization? Like a monologue first, then commentary on society ("in the year 2000"), guests, and a music group? Does Carson Daly have that type of structure? What about other stations besides NBC? And why does that structure work? Do we like structure in our tv shows?
=Are Ellen DeGeneres and Sharon Osbourne talking about different things than their male counterparts at night? What types of questions do they ask versus the males?
=What is unappropriate to make fun of in a monologue?
=Jay is a bit older than Conan.. does that matter when they make jokes?
=Making fun of cultures... Conan makes fun of being a tall Irish man.. Jay makes fun of Italians sometimes.. why is it okay for them to do that?

These are surface level things I think about when watching them. The comments they make about society are other topics too.. like the "fat Americans" comment or "young men and older women" (Ashton and Demi)... if any of you are stumped, watch Conan or Jay or SNL.. you may get hit with an idea!!

10.02.2003

[I emailed this to everyone.. if you didn't get it, email me and I'll change/modify your email address in my address book.]

If you are a Blackboard user, you can check out the changes I made to our points for upcoming assignments...
For those that aren't enrolled in Blackboard, here's what changed:

I took half of the class blogging points (150) away. I did this because it didn't seem right to give 20 points per entry when 10 points would do. Those leftover 150 points went into the following:: a WA#11 (to be assigned while we're reading Flowers for Algernon MAYBE?) worth 25 points, a particular class blog entry for Oct 23rd (this entry will be much larger than your other entries, so I made it worth more points and separated from the rest) worth 25 points, and class participation points. MANY of you don't speak up in class (argh!)... so at the end of the semester I will have you write up a small paragraph persuading me to give you all 100 points. IF you have talked in class a lot (usually if I know your name easily, then you've talked a lot), I'll be able to give you the points because you earned them. IF I have to sit and think of when I have actually SEEN you IN class, then you may not have earned all the points...

Besides dividing up the 150 points, I also added points for Peer Review on Paper #3... 5 points again for coming to class that day (the Thursday before Thanksgiving) and helping out others with their papers.. these are EXTRA points, of course.

Our total points will still be 1000. The Blackboard's gradebook has 1010 right now because of the 10 extra points devoted to peer review (of Paper #1 and Paper #3). If your final points end up between 1000- 1010 than you will have a 100% in this class.

This changes the syllabus a little again, but if you just jot down the additions, you should be fine. Also- a hint for those actually reading this.. WA#9, in the syllabus, is To Be Announced. Well, it's going to be assigned in-class on Oct 14.

See you all Tuesday!

P.S. There is still extra credit out there for 25 points: Replying to a Spectrum article via a "Letter to the Editor". You need to send it to me and them by email in order to get all 25 points.
